Reflections for Lent II – Sunday, March 16, 2025
Who is God?
The Scripture readings for the first Sunday in Lent, gave us some insight into who God is by highlighting the characters of God that we rely on in our daily living.
In Psalm 91: 1- 2, He is our refuge, the hedge of protection around us and our family.
In Psalm 91:14 -15, He is our deliverer when we experience troubles of various kinds.
In Deuteronomy 26: 1-11, He is the provider of the good things in our lives, such as our spouse, our children, our homes, our jobs, our good health and our peace.
In Romans 10:8-13, He is the giver of salvation through his Son, Christ Jesus to everyone who believes. And this gives us access to a great many benefits that the unbeliever will never possess.
In Luke 4: 1-13, Jesus demonstrates to us during his temptation, the power of knowing God’s word and using the word to fight back evil.
As we start this journey of Lent many Christians and non-believers take the decision to abstain from some vice during the period. It is hoped that in doing so, we do not lose sight of the real purpose of Lent, which is to take our eyes off ourselves and focus our eyes on God.
While Jesus was fasting in the wilderness for those forty days and nights, he would have been communing with his Father in heaven. This action would have allowed him to win the battle and defeat the temptations brought on by the devil.
So, while we are “abstaining from our vices”, focus on God. Two Sundays ago, the message in the Order of Service encouraged us to draw closer to God. So, spend time in meditation, reading and studying God’s word, listening and singing along to worship music, taking time to pray throughout the days, doing scripture writing and worshipping God with those hymns that are so near and dear to our hearts.
Be blessed!
