Views From The Pews – Trinity Sunday, May 26, 2024

For nearly 700 years the First Sunday after Pentecost has been observed by many churches as Trinity Sunday. It is intended to highlight that the God whom we worship is revealed in three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We are invited to acknowledge humbly that this is a Holy Mystery which cannot be easily understood or logically explained, but which has become a real part of our experience in our personal and corporate worship.

An examination of our prayers will show that at times we address our prayers to the Father, at other times we pray to the Son Jesus, and still at other times, though less frequently, we address our prayers directly to the Holy Spirit. We also combine the persons in different ways as we pray, and quite often we pray to the Father, in the name of the Son, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Numerous examples of this practice can be found in our hymns, and I would encourage you to take a little time and leaf through your hymn book and see this clearly demonstrated.

Finally, in this regard, I draw to your attention the frequency in which the “Gloria” and the “Doxology” are used in our acts of worship. When we lift our hearts in praise we make it plain that each person of the Holy Trinity is to be equally worshipped and adored. Here again, I ask you to take a quick look at the Prayer Book Services, Morning Prayer, Evening Prayer and Eucharist, noting how in these acts of worship we give glory and praise to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is most fitting then that we conclude most of these services with the familiar words, “The blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.”

Our encounter with the Triune God calls us to prayer and I take this opportunity to ask all our members to be much in prayer this week for God’s blessing on the Healing Conference which takes place at the Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston on Saturday, June 1, 2024, and on June 2, the Liturgy of the Holy Eucharist and Laying on of Hands at St. Luke’s Church, Cross Roads at 8:00 a.m. under the theme, “Healing for a Hurting Nation.”
